Brush up on your Bruegel

And be sure to stop for coffee and cake – Viennese coffeehouse culture is so important to Vienna that it is on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritages. The timeless Austrian cake, the Sachertorte, also has its origins here.

The timelines either side are equally compelling… In Wittenberg, stroll in the footsteps of Martin Luther, founder of the Protestant Reformation. Explore the Czech town of Děčín, a strategic Elbe River gateway crowned by a medieval castle. In Berlin, the reunified city buzzes with art, cosmopolitan culture and great architecture.

Make memories and break bread with locals
Many of our strongest memories – of places we’ve been, people we love – are attached to food. So, while travel offers an opportunity to indulge in authentic local cuisine and appreciate wines rarely found on our wine lists, these precious moments can also be savoured long after.
Wine towns abound along Central Europe’s rivers. In Germany, more than half of the wine regions are clustered near the Rhine, as is the centre of France’s Alsace wine industry. And while the dishes are often meat-based and hearty, made distinctly delicious by regional flavours, Riesling and lighter reds, like Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Trollinger, rule.
Stroll Old Towns and city squares, tour castles and cathedrals, chat with food producers and discover countless dining options to share with fellow travellers and locals. Back on the river, enjoy Viking’s renowned onboard culinary experience, destination focused dining and no extra charges or services fees.
Get closer: Sail the Middle Rhine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site lined by steep vineyards, castles, fortresses and ruins – and the inspiration for famous artists, writers, poets and composers.
Itineraries: Rhine Getaway. Or take a deep dive into Western Europe’s food and wine with Chateaux, Rivers & Wine.

Get closer to someone else’s passion
For the culturally curious, Central Europe offers countless ‘pinch me’ moments, travelling in the footsteps of history.
In the heart of Amsterdam-Centrum, the 17th century man-made canals and narrow houses stand testament to the Dutch Golden Age. Conveniently, this is also the location of Viking’s port.
The famed Teutonic Knights, the protectors of Christian pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land, made their base in the German city of Koblenz. Take the gondola up to the neighbouring Ehrenbreitstein Fortress to learn why this magnificent stronghold was repeatedly under siege and to enjoy the spectacular views.
The Old Town of Miltenberg with its medieval houses and flower-bedecked balconies looks like a fairytale scene – and likely it was, as nearby Hanau was home to the Brothers Grimm. While Würzburg’s Bishops’ Residenz with its ornate rooms and vast ‘Four Continents’ fresco painted by Venetian artist Giovanni Tiepolo is another must-see.
Get closer: Enjoy Viking’s Privileged Access on a tour of the oldest Kinderdijk windmill and meet the miller and his family. Or head up to the roof of the Cologne Cathedral and to hidden areas to learn about ongoing excavation and restoration efforts.
Itineraries: European Sojourn. Or explore the low countries of The Netherlands and Belgium in Tulips & Windmills.
