Travel chaos as tour company cancels hundreds of trips
Hundreds – possibly thousands – of Australian travellers have been thrown into a financial and emotional nightmare after Melbourne-based AVG Travels cancelled overseas tours without warning.
A newlywed couple said the timing left them scrambling just hours before their honeymoon departure.
“There was no way we could just stop everything and replan it,” they said. “There were so many people in the same situation.”
10 News+ contacted AVG Travels for comment on why bookings are still being taken while tours are being cancelled.
The company did not directly address that question, instead issuing a statement saying it is “contacting affected customers directly regarding alternative travel arrangements, rescheduling options or refund requests, depending on individual circumstances”.
The disruption comes as industry bodies confirm AVG has been removed from accreditation programs and is under investigation, with customers urged to explore chargeback options and review their travel insurance coverage.
