Only a select few million Australians are in line for an Anzac Day long weekend this year.

With that fact dawning on people planning their 2026 escapes, NSW Premier Chris Minns has revealed his government is discussing creating a new public holiday, accounting for Anzac Day falling on a Saturday.

Remembrance services to mark Anzac Day will be held nationwide on April 25. But only people in Western Australia and the ACT will actually get a public holiday on Monday, April 27.

“It’s not just this year, it’s next year as well that you don’t get the day off,” Minns told Triple M radio on Thursday.

“And we (NSW) are underserved when it comes to public holidays, there’s a lot more in every other state.”

“We’re going to have a conversation about it for this year.”

There will be talks with the RSL to ensure creating a long weekend didn’t detract from the national day of remembrance.

“I’m not committing to that today because I think that this is a decision that we’ve got to make with the RSL in particular,” Minns said.

“We’ve got a lot of veterans … I think most people have got a lot of reverence for Anzac Day, they respect it. They recognise that it’s a time – it really is our national day – when we respect people who’ve died for the country.”

The Victorian government, which also does not observe the Monday holiday, and business groups were contacted for comment.

Anzac Day is one of 10 public holidays recognised nationwide in 2026.

Most Australians get another three or four, including those in Victoria, Queensland, the ACT and South Australia.

But NSW enjoys just two extra: The King’s Birthday in June and Labour Day in October.

Christmas Island celebrates an extra six, including two for Chinese New Year in mid-February.
