Unions join forces in nationwide protest against Amazon

Unions across Australia joined forces in a nationwide protest campaign against Amazon on Friday, picketing outside fulfilment centres to rally against the company’s impact on local jobs.

Delivery drivers claim the multinational retail giant is creating a race to the bottom for workers’ rates.

The Transport Workers’ Union, the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employee Association, and the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance, say Amazon Flex drivers earn $29.50 an hour, and must pay their own expenses such as cars, maintenance, insurance and super.

Compare that to a StarTrack van courier, who earns $54.85 an hour plus super and leave on top, and that ends up being nearly $200 more for one day’s work.

The unions want Amazon to pay decent wages and fair superannuation to workers, and more tax to the government.

An Amazon spokesperson told 10 News+ it paid “delivery drivers competitively for their time” while claiming no driver was expected to complete a delivery if they felt unsafe.

The company said it provided car insurance and 24-hour support via an app to delivery partners while they were on the road.
