Dezi Freeman had hundreds of child abuse files: Report

Source: ABC TV

Police found hundreds of files of child abuse material after Dezi Freeman killed two officers and went on the run, it has been revealed.

The ABC reported on Wednesday that Victorian officers had a search warrant for the 56-year-old’s devices last August.

On the verge of having his sordid stash uncovered, Freeman shot and killed two officers and then fled his Porepunkah property, evading authorities for seven months.

The ABC investigation revealed that police later discovered hundreds of files of child abuse material.

Multiple law enforcement sources told the ABC an investigation into historical sex offences included allegations of sexual exposure.

Detectives were reportedly in contact with one alleged victim.

A month ago, Freeman was shot dead in a hail of bullets by Victoria Police Special Operations Group officers on a remote property in Thologolong, on the Victoria-NSW border.

Freeman was wanted for shooting dead Neal Thompson and Vadim de Waart-Hottart, who were among a team of officers serving a warrant at his Porepunkah home in August 2025.

Queensland University of Technology forensic criminologist Claire Ferguson said the Victorian coroner would examine all three deaths.

As part of that process, a brief of evidence will be compiled, witnesses will be called and the coroner will study the final moments of Freeman’s life and the police decision to shoot him.

“They’ll have a full reconstruction of what actually occurred and that might be establishing people’s exact positioning in the scene and forensic evidence,” Ferguson said.

Footage shows Freeman wrapped in a blanket when he emerged from a shipping container, which appeared to be part of a makeshift campsite, before pulling out a gun and pointing it at police.

Child sexual abuse allegations levelled against Freeman would be investigated to inform the coroner on police’s initial decision to attend his property, but a finding of guilt would not be made.

The coronial process is expected to deliver much-needed answers for the families of the slain officers and Freeman.
