A woman and child have drowned after falling into a waterway in Melbourne’s south-east on Monday afternoon.
A witness reported two people had been swept away after falling into Dandenong Creek, near Allan Street in Dandenong, about 3.45pm, police said.
It’s believed the woman went to help the child and also got into difficulty.
Police searched the area and found the unconscious pair. They were pulled from the water and given CPR.

However, despite the best efforts of first responders, neither the boy nor the woman could be revived. They were declared dead at the scene.
Neither has been publicly identified but they are believed to be a 33-year-old woman from nearby Doveton and a seve-year-old boy, also from Doveton.
One witness described the drama unfolding.
“I was walking along the creek, two bodies floating, and then two coppers come, dive in the water, got them out of the water and then start doing CPR as soon as possible,” Haseeb Haider told the Nine Network.
Greater Dandenong Council observed a minute’s silence at Monday night’s meeting.
“Our hearts go out to those affected by this awful tragedy, including their family, friends, and emergency services who attended,” said Mayor Jim Memeti.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or through crimestoppersvic.com.au.
