Fears grow for kidnapped granddad after alarming video

Source: Nine Network

Police believe a Sydney grandfather abducted from his home in a case of mistaken identity is still alive, as alarming video of the moment he was kidnapped emerges.

Chris Baghsarian, 85, was alone in his North Ryde home when he was taken and bundled into dark-coloured SUV about 5am on Friday morning.

Police hold grave concerns for the grandfather, who needs daily medication, after they were called to the home by neighbours who heard a commotion.

When they arrived, police found signs of forced entry at the home.

On Monday, police issued a plea for whoever was holding Baghasrian to release him.

“This is a very strange appeal, but we appeal to those who are responsible to release Mr Baghsarian, somewhere safe. Take him somewhere safe and inform us, or inform somebody that we can get to him and get him the medical treatment he needs,” Detective Acting Superintendent Andrew Marks said.

“He’s 85 years’ old, he’s on daily medication. [It’s] very important, we need him returned now.”

Marks earlier said Baghsarian was in his bedroom when three men took him and bundled him into a dark-coloured SUV.

“Police consider that Mr Baghsarian was not the intended target …You have the wrong person,” Marks said.

Vision published by the Nine network shows a dark Toyota pulling into Northcott Street in North Ryde before Baghsarian was taken.

A man in high-viz clothing is seen emerging from the car, followed by an accomplice.

Moments later, they are seen pushing the elderly man across the landing as the car moves closer.

Police said a burnt-out vehicle matching the description of the SUV involved was found nearby.

They would not confirm a Daily Telegraph report that a second video has emerged showing Baghsarian tied up, reportedly bloody and beaten. On Monday, Marks said only “it’s distressing to see an 85-year-old man in that condition”.

He said Baghsarian’s family, who are not involved in any criminal activity, were concerned and shocked at his kidnapping.

“They’re quite surprised that this has happened and what they want is the safe return of their father,” he said.

“Please release Mr Baghsarian. Take him to a hospital. Take him to somewhere that’s safe, and we’ll do the rest.”

It’s believed Baghsarian is a widower who has lived alone for almost four years.

No ransom demand has been made, leaving police to appeal directly to Baghsarian’s kidnappers.

Marks said he didn’t know why they were yet to return the 85-year-old. But he said investigators were “a million per cent confident” they had the wrong man.

“It’s not an instance where they’re randomly taking people for the sake of it,” he said.

“They were intending to take somebody, but have taken the wrong person.”

NSW Premier Chris Minns echoed calls for the perpetrators to release Baghsarian but warned of serious consequences for the abductors once caught.

“It’s not too late to end this situation … please return him to his family,” he said.

“Drop Mr Baghsarian off at a shopping centre, an emergency department or even a nursing home.”

Police wouldn’t confirm if the intended target was linked to organised crime.

Anyone who has noticed unusual movements in their neighbourhoods is also urged to contact police.
