Hot on the high heels of Meghan Markle’s glitzy Christmas special comes news of a new Netflix project involving the Duke and Duchess of Sussex – and this one’s a rom-com.
It was revealed this week that the couple will be co-producers of the film adaptation of The Wedding Date, a bestselling novel by American writer Jasmine Guillory.
According to entertainment website Deadline, Netflix has hired writer Tracy Oliver – whose credits include the 2017 movie Girls Trip, starring Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith – to adapt the book for the screen.
Meghan and Harry will reportedly produce The Wedding Date through their company Archewell Productions, alongside Tracy Ryerson.
Guillory’s own website describes her novel – the first in a series – as a “fun and flirty” story revolving around two high-flying professionals who meet while stuck in a lift. Their lives become entangled after Alexa agrees to be Drew’s last-minute “fake date” at his ex’s wedding.
Harry and Meghan have been working with Netflix since 2020, and renewed their partnership in August this year.
“My husband and I feel inspired by our partners who work closely with us and our Archewell Productions team to create thoughtful content across genres that resonates globally, and celebrates our shared vision,” Meghan said at the time.
Among the shows the couple have produced previously through Archewell are the explosive documentary Harry and Meghan, Polo, Heart of Invictus and Live to Lead.
The new deal included a second season of With Love, Meghan, a lifestyle and cooking show starring the duchess that was Netflix’s most-watched culinary show but also widely panned by critics.
The first episode in the new season of With Love landed this month. It was a “Holiday Celebration” special that invited viewers to join Meghan at home in Montecito, California, “as she shares how she likes to make this time with family and friends especially memorable and meaningful”.
Archewell’s upcoming slate includes an adaptation of another bestselling romance novel, Meet Me at the Lake by Canadian author Carley Fortune, according to Deadline.
