Aussie slayer Gibson continues Barty-like run in Miami

Source: WTA

Australian tennis revelation Talia Gibson is a win away from gate-crashing the world’s top 50 after continuing her Ash Barty-like march through March.

A day after sending four-time grand slam champion and former world No.1 Naomi Osaka packing, the 21-year-old outclassed one of the sport’s brightest new talents, American teen sensation Iva Jovic, 6-2 6-2 to storm into the last 16 of the Miami Open.

The straight-sets victory was Gibson’s fifth over a top-20 player in just three weeks as she followed up her brilliant run to the quarter-finals at Indian Wells by reaching the fourth round in the second leg of the so-called US “Sunshine swing”.

Incredibly, after starting the year ranked No.119, Gibson needed a wildcard into the Australian Open.

But now the Perth prospect is on the cusp of the top 50 after being guaranteed to slash her ranking by at least half next Monday.

The last Australian to enjoy such a run in Miami was Barty when she lived up to her top ranking to defend the title at tennis’s unofficial fifth major in 2021 by taking down four top-20 rivals in a row, including past and future world No.1s Victoria Azarenka and Aryna Sabalenka.

Standing in Gibson’s path of successive quarter-final showings is the second-ranked reigning Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina.

But Kazakhstan’s 2024 and 2025 Miami runner-up will hold few fears for Gibson after the in-form star produced an immaculate display of serving to dispatch the 18-year-old Jovic in just 72 minutes.

At No.17 in the standings, Jovic is the youngest player in the world’s top 20 but she couldn’t even fashion a single break point against Gibson.

“She’s a really competitive player,” Gibson said of Jovic.

“She’s very fast. I knew I needed to take more opportunities to try and open up the court when I could and be super aggressive.”

Gibson came through qualifying in California, winning six matches in all, and has now won five on the trot in the other major WTA 1000 event.

She’s not dropped a set yet in Miami and hasn’t even had her serve broken in her past three matches.

Before Indian Wells, the Western Australian had been ranked No.112 in the world. Having jumped to at least No.68, she’s set to at least become world No.56 next week and move to second in the Australian rankings ahead of Daria Kasatkina and behind only Maya Joint.

In other third-round matches, top-ranked titleholder Sabalenka powered past American Caty McNally 6-4 6-2, while Rybakina downed Ukraine’s world No.27 Marta Kostyuk 6-3 6-4 to confirm her date with Gibson.

Fifth Jessica Pegula posted a 6-2 6-2 win over Leylah Fernandez, but seventh-seeded Jasmine Paolini, world No.9 Elina Svitolina, 11th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova and 2025 Australian Open champ Madison Keys all followed Jovic out the exit gates.

Paolini lost 5-7 6-2 7-5 to Jelena Ostapenko, 2024 Melbourne Park runner-up Zheng Qinwen ousted Keys 4-6 6-2 6-4, Svitolina fell 6-3 7-5 to Hailey Baptiste and Jaqueline Christian beat Alexandrova 6-3 4-6 7-6 (7-5).
