A Victorian croquet player is on the verge of being recognised by Guinness World Records as the oldest competitive woman in the sport.

May Beveridge, who is 101, continues to power across the court in Lakes Entrance, leaving teammates and opponents in awe of her energy, skill and determination.

Friends describe her as a “gem” and an inspiration, while Beveridge says staying active, eating well and having something meaningful to do has all contributed to her longevity. She took up croquet only later in life but says the sport keeps both body and mind sharp.

After the loss of Beveridge’s husband, the local club became a source of support and community. Now, it hopes her potential record will shine a spotlight on both her remarkable life and the club she loves.
