The guardian angels flying medical help to rural Australia

It isn’t every day you see a mega-wealthy biotech mogul land a stylish jet onto a tarmac in remote Australia.
But that’s Patrick Machado’s way of giving back to the country, where he has recently become a citizen.
The pilot is one of thousands of volunteers for charity ‘Angel Flight’ – donating their time and planes to provide crucial medical help for sick people in outback towns.
Not only do they fly health professionals to the bush – so patients don’t have to leave their homes – but also bring them to cities for care. Laurie Dickson has terminal cancer and hails the service as lifesaving.
“Without them, I wouldn’t be here,” he told 10 News Plus.
Laurie lives in Grawin, a remote opal mining town near Lightning Ridge and has to travel up to 800 kilometres to Sydney for treatment.
Through donations, Angel Flight funds the pilot’s fuel and says it’s facing a 50 per cent price increase.
The charity refuses to stop flying, but is relying on the generosity of volunteers and the public to help keep wings in the sky.
