German soccer fans will soon be enjoying free beer and ice-cream after European footballer Ermedin Demirović comes good on a promise to treat an entire city.

Demirović promised drinks for the 600,000 residents of the south-west German city if he made it to the World Cup with Bosnia-Herzegovina.

“If we manage to do it, drinks are on me for all of Stuttgart. I’ll buy beer for the fans, that would be insane, he said ahead of play-offs in March.

Bosnia won that game against Wales 4-2.

Then, three weeks ago it stunned Italy to qualify for the June event in North America. Not that that game wasn’t close: It finished at 1-1, with Bosnia triumphing 4-1 on penalties.

“It’s surreal, I’ve got no words and I’ve lost my voice,” Demirović told Sky after the final whistle.

“It’s incredible. We played really well and we 100 per cent deserve to be going to the World Cup. What we’ve achieved for our country still hasn’t properly sunk in.

“We don’t care who we play against – we’re going to the World Cup. We’re going to celebrate now, so we don’t care who our opponents are. If we play like we did against Italy then we’ve got a chance against anyone.”

Demirović is now organising the drinks – and ice-cream for kids – as a thank-you to fans who’ve supported him at club level.

“Taking part in the World Cup with the Bosnian national team means a vast amount to me and this summer a huge dream will be fulfilled,” Demirović, who is a forward for Stuttgart in Germany’s Bundesliga, wrote on Instagram on Tuesday.

“Ahead of the play-off games I signalled there’d be drinks for the VfB (Stuttgart) fans if I really would be there at the World Cup. Now I want to keep that promise.”

Demirović said he’ll hand out the beer personally for an hour next week at a spring festival in the city in Germany’s south-west. He’s also arranging for an ice-cream truck for children at a Stuttgart training session and making a donation to the club’s charitable foundation.

Demirović said last month he doesn’t drink alcohol because it “goes against my lifestyle”, in comments reported by German broadcaster SWR.

“But I don’t want to be a party pooper for those who do like to drink it,” he said.

Born in Germany of Bosnian heritage, Demirović has scored 12 goals in 32 games for Stuttgart this season.

Bosnia-Herzegovina, which has been at the World Cup once before, in 2014, has a favourable draw in Group B against Canada, Switzerland and Qatar.

The FIFA World Cup starts in the US, Canada and Mexico on June 11.
