Former military nurse recognised for an extraordinary life of service

For Jillian Doyle, Coburg RSL is like a second home. The 86-year-old has been involved with the sub-branch in Melbourne’s northern suburbs since she was about six years old.

Doyle’s father served with the 58th Battalion in New Guinea during the Second World War.

At the age of 18, she followed in his footsteps, joining the Citizens Military Force as a nurse. There she worked alongside World War II heroin Vivian Bullwinkel, who was the sole survivor after a Japanese massacre killed 21 other nurses in Indonesia.

It was during her time in the CMF that Doyle met her late husband Glen. He was a commando with the Australian Army, before joining the British Parachute Regiment.

After the couple left the military, they shifted their focus to volunteering at their local RSL, selling poppies to raise vital money to support veterans and their families.

They were awarded life memberships in 2018 and their names are etched into RSL history, with a permanent tribute for their decades of commitment unveiled at the weekend.
