Divorce is as common as it is costly, with each side spending thousands of dollars, even if there’s not much to fight about.
Now, artificial intelligence is being used to help amicable couples go their separate ways quickly and cheaply – and the government’s picking up most of the bill.
The online service is called Amica, where amicable couples who want a simple split can bypass the legal system. It’s initiated in minutes and finalised in weeks.
Both parties enter details about their assets, debts, contributions, and future needs. The system then determines a settlement, based on legal precedents. It can divide property, assets and even generate custody arrangements, telling both sides what a court would likely decide. If they agree, the app lodges the paperwork.
The system was developed by National Legal Aid and funded by the federal government to serve couples who don’t need lawyers, easing the burden on the Family Court.
Welcome to the brave new break-up world.
