Fireworks cremations: The trend changing how we say goodbye

Fireworks cremations are emerging as a unique and heartfelt way for Australians to farewell loved ones by lighting up the night sky.
For one Australian couple, the concept couldn’t have been better.
When they recently tied the knot, they chose to honour their late fathers in a way that reflected their personalities — incorporating their ashes into a fireworks display during the celebration.
Groom Chris Nicolau reflected on his time with his dad, saying: “He specifically loved fireworks. I remember as a kid he would set them off in the backyard.”
Bride Ebony Nicolau said the tribute captured her father’s larger-than-life personality.
“It was a really good way to send him off – because he was going to go out with a bang, pun intended.”
While unconventional, firework funerals are gaining traction among families who want a celebration of life rather than a traditional service.
A recent report highlight the increasing price of traditional funerals, with burials costing up to $23,000 and cremations about $15,000.
Firework funerals, by comparison, can be a more affordable alternative at around $6000. For some, they’re also a far more fitting tribute.
“It’s a very important closing memory to be going up in fireworks for the families,” said Caig Hull, from Ashes To Ashes Funeral Services.
So, for families seeking a farewell that feels personal, uplifting and unforgettable, sending a loved one off with a literal bang may be the ultimate tribute.
