Under-16s locked out of Meta accounts ahead of social media ban

As the countdown to December 10 – when Australia’s landmark social media ban takes effect – continues, children under 16 are already being locked out of their accounts.

A message has been begun appearing on Instagram, Facebook, and Threads informing some users they won’t be able to access the platform and that their profiles won’t be visible until they turn 16.

Fifteeen-year-old Noah Jones is the face of a High Court challenge, fighting to stop the Albanese government’s world-first laws.

He says predators and explicit content will still exist online and that kids will find ways to bypass the ban, making it more dangerous.

The Sydney teenager is not the only one criticising the ban.

Rachel Lord, Google’s senior manager for public policy says the laws “will not fulfil its promise to make kids safer online, and will, in fact, make Australian kids less safe on YouTube”.
