‘ICE-chasing’ teens on the frontline of US immigration crackdown

Two brothers from Chicago are sacrificing normal teenage life to follow ICE agents and their immigration enforcement across the US.

Brothers Ben and Sam Luhmann, aged 17 and 16, have been documenting the agency’s operations in Minneapolis for weeks, prompted to action by the killing of Renee Good.

“We saw so much violence up there… they keep portraying their operations as public safety, getting the criminals rounded up, but over and over again we’d see like a mum or a dad get taken away,” said Sam.

The pair are part of a growing wave of watchers documenting ICE agents’ actions and locations as tensions continue between thousands of federal agents and protesters in the wake of the deaths last month of Good and, soon after, 37-year-old nurse Alex Pretti.

Ben and Sam also fear for their safety – after being pushed around, tear gassed and pepper sprayed multiple times.

That comes after US President Donald Trump’s administration asked bystanders to not film their agents and operations.

But the siblings feel it is their duty and right to keep them accountable.

“They don’t want checks and balances,” the teens said. “They don’t want the cameras to be out there.”
