Warm sun or an unwelcome drenching? What to expect from Easter weather

Source: Bureau of Meteorology

The Easter break is almost upon us, and with it perhaps the last chance for some months for many Australians to enjoy a long weekend of sun-filled days.

For some of us, that’s just what the autumn holiday will bring – while others are in for anything from scattered showers to an unwelcome drenching.

Here’s what to expect in the capital city nearest you from Friday, according to the Bureau of Meterology and leading forecaster Weatherzone.

Sydney

The harbour city will bask in 26 degrees on Friday but it gets slightly less pleasant after that.

Showers delivering up to 10 millimetres of rain are forecast for Saturday, which will have a top of 24. Sunday will be a similar day, while Monday will be partly cloudy and reach 25.

Melbourne

It’ll be cooler in the Victorian capital, with a top of just 18 degrees forecast for Friday.

Saturday will be sunny with a top of 21, while Sunday is the pick of the days with sunshine and 26 degrees. Monday is expected to be even warmer, reaching 27, but all good things will come to an end.

“Showers should arrive on Monday, and at this stage look likely to persist into the new working week,” wrote Weatherzone.

Brisbane

Unsurprisingly, it will be warmer in Queensland, with tops of 28 and 29 degrees before 27 degrees on Monday.

“Skies will be sunny for large periods of time, but a shower or two could blow in with the easterly wind flow,” Weatherzone said.

Showers are forecast for all days except Monday.

Canberra

The national capital might almost one of the picks of the big cities for the long weekend – as long as you don’t require too much in the way of sun.

Little rain is forecast across the holiday, with tops of 25 on Friday, just 19 degrees on Saturday and 21 on Sunday. Monday will also be dry, with a top of 24 degrees.

Down on the Apple Isle, the cooler weather seems to have arrived already.

Friday will bring a top of only 15 degrees, followed by 17 on Saturday. Sunday is warmer, getting as high as 20, followed by a maximum of 23 on Monday.

“Dry weather and a steady warming trend should set in until late Monday, when the next cold front arrives,” Weatherzone said.

Up to five millimetres of rain is forecast for Monday.

Adelaide

The Easter forecast in the South Australian capital might best be described as warm, dry and very pleasant.

It kicks off with a maximum of 24 on a partly cloudy Friday, followed by a mostly sunny Saturday reaching 27 degrees. Sunday brings a bit more cloud with a top of 29 and Monday a possible shower and back to 27.

Perth

Conditions will be similar in the west, with Perth forecast to have a top of 28 degrees on Friday, 24 on Saturday and Sunday and 25 degrees on Monday.

Friday gets a mostly sunny verdict, followed by three days with partial cloud. No rain is forecast.

Darwin

Last, but by no means least, Darwin will do its own thing over the break – warm, humid and some rain.

Friday and Saturday have predicted maximums of 34 and 33 respectively (their overnight minimum of 25 would give some of the southern capitals  day-time envy). Sunday and Monday will also be 33 degrees.

“The official wet season in the Northern Territory’s Top End runs from November through to the end of April, so it should be no surprise that afternoon showers are still on the Darwin forecast throughout the Easter period,” Weatherzone said.

More than 30 millimetres of rain is forecast across the four days, including up to 15 millimetres for Monday.
