WA secession push revived with new manifesto

A new push for Western Australian secession has emerged with the release of a 400-page manifesto outlining how the state could operate as an independent nation because of its wealth of natural resources.
Former barrister Julian Gillespie says the federal system is taking too much from the states.
“It’s become parasitic,” he said.
The proposal suggests a 20 per cent tax on WA resources, keeping GST and land revenue, and abolishing income tax so workers keep all their earnings.
It also calls for key services to shift to local councils, and the creation of a Western Australian defence force.
The plan revives debate sparked by the 1933 Western Australian secession referendum when voters backed leaving Australia, which ultimately didn’t happen.
