A man in his 70s and three teenagers have been struck by lightning as a wild storm swept across Perth on Thursday morning.

The man in his 70s was walking his dog when he was hit and seriously injured in Hamersley, in Perth’s north, about 8.30am.

Three teenagers at a high school in Mount Helena, in the city’s east, were also struck by lightning as the storm slammed the Perth Hills about 10.15am.

The Western Australian capital’s first major storm of 2026 reportedly sparked house fires.

A meter box at a house on Ravenswood Drive in Nollamara was reportedly hit and caused a blaze which firefighters put out by 9am.

Power was out at almost 3000 properties in Balga, Hamersley, Hamilton Hill, Innaloo, Parmelia and Palmyra.

Lightning also disrupted train services in the metro area, with cancellations on the Mandurah, Yanchep and Thornlie Cockburn lines.
