A property developer says he has signed a deal with the Trump organisation to build a $1.5 billion “six-star” tower on the Gold Coast and has pushed back at misconceptions that it will look “gaudy”.
The proposed skyscraper will be 340 metres and 91 storeys high — taller than any existing building in the nation.
The Trump Organisation on Tuesday (AEDT) boasted about the expansion of its global portfolio with its first project in Australia — Trump International Hotel & Tower Gold Coast.
Located in the heart of Surfers Paradise, the development would “introduce a world-class luxury hotel, exclusive residences, and exceptional lifestyle amenities to one of the world’s most iconic beachfront destinations”.
“While additional details will be unveiled soon, this extraordinary project will set a new benchmark for luxury living and hospitality in Australia,” a Trump Organisation media release said.
“Stay tuned as we prepare to reveal more about the unparalleled experiences, residences, and opportunities that await on the Gold Coast.”
But the proposal is far from a done deal, with the Gold Coast City Council saying it has not received a development application.
Altus chief executive David Young said he signed a deal with the Trump Group at Mar-a-Lago on February 14.
In a statement, Young pushed back against “misconceptions” about the project. He said the hotel he had been pursuing for 20 years would not have “gaudy gold-plated bathrooms fixtures, mirrors and heavy chandeliers”.
“The modern Trump package is high-end design and fit outs, with a premium feel. It’s tasteful and expensive – when you walk into a modern Trump property, the impression is ‘quality’ and ‘boutique’,” he said.
Young said the design would follow properties being built in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and soon-to-be built in Doha, UAE, and that no expenses would be spared.
“We are now deeply into a process of design, engineering, construction and fit-out,” he said.
“The design is impressive, bringing incredible quality into a package that also feels boutique. It’s a unique experience and there will be no other like it in Australia.”

One third of the building is a six-star resort-hotel, overlooking the Pacific Ocean at Surfers Paradise Beach. Another third is residences – 270 apartments – which are likely to start at $5 million, with the penthouse prices not yet determined.
“The natural home to the well-heeled, and it will be finished before the [Brisbane] Olympics start [in 2032], creating a tourism adjunct to the Games themselves,” Young said.
Acting Gold Coast mayor Mark Hammell said the city welcomed investment, as it displayed confidence and helped create jobs.
“A formal development application will be required, and we look forward to considering the application once it is received,” he said.
