Disability advocates speak out after Virgin Australia airport ordeals

Nightmare flights

Virgin Australia is under fire over the alleged mistreatment of disabled passengers, after refusing to let two people board.

In separate incidents, Virgin claimed the pair’s wheelchairs were either too big or too heavy.

The victims say it’s all too common, and are calling for airlines to be held to account.

Oliver Morton-Evans lives with cerebral palsy, and works as an operations manager at a disability tech company.

He was held up at Melbourne airport while checking-in for a return flight home to Sydney, despite having no issues on his first flight there.

The Virgin staff allegedly told him his motorised wheelchair won’t fit, and told him to try Jetstar.

Eight hours later, Oliver and his wheelchair were put on the very same aircraft he was originally barred from boarding.

Meanwhile, Dina Bassile, the founder of a disability awareness training company, was also recently stuck at Melbourne airport trying to board a flight to Brisbane.

She says Virgin staff did not allow her 160-kilogram wheelchair on the plane because it exceeded the airline’s weight limit — despite Bassile having no trouble travelling with the wheelchair previously.

She was then left with no choice but to spend $1000 out of pocket for a last-minute Qantas flight.
