Shark encounters and attacks are rare, however they are on the rise in Australia.
The risk increases with more people in the water. But what if there was a way to protect surfers and swimmers without avoiding the ocean altogether?
There is a solution and now scientists have put it to the test, feeding bite-resistant wetsuits to the most dangerous predators.
Researchers from Flinders University have been out at sea for a month, attracting white and tiger sharks to test how protective the material is.
They found that if a shark bites the suit, there might still be internal injuries and bone breakages but it would reduce the amount of blood loss.
They say the innovation could be the difference between life and death, giving confidence to those wishing to stay as safe as possible when braving the deep blue.
