Media veterans and mates Karl Stefanovic and Eddie McGuire will launch a new weekly show after signing with the radio network that sacked Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O Henderson.

ARN announced on Tuesday that Stefanovic and McGuire would headline a “new entertainment format” across radio, podcast and streaming called The Long Weekend.

ARN said The Long Weekend would be three hours and include “great music, unmissable banter, big personalities, big opinions, and no-holds-barred discussions”.

The Long Weekend will see two of the biggest names in Australian media discuss the biggest news, sport and entertainment moments of the week, joined by guests at the centre of the stories shaping the national conversation,” said a media statement on Tuesday.

McGuire Media will also collaborate with ARN on a new sport-focused podcast for its iHeart network.

The announcement has added fuel to repeated rumours that Stefanovic will leave Channel Nine’s Today show when his contract expires later this year.

In January, Stefanovic launched his own successful podcast, The Karl Stefanovic Show.

McGuire is a former host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and The Footy Show.

ARN axed the smutty Kyle and Jackie O Show in March after an on-air spat which blew up when Jackie O said she could no longer work with Sandilands.

Advertisers who did not want to be associated with the Kyle and Jackie O Show cost the radio company more than $26 million in lost revenue last year.

ARN said it was now “gaining momentum” with its new projects.

“Karl and Eddie are two of the biggest stars in Australian media and they are now at ARN,” said ARN CEO Michael Stephenson.

The Long Weekend is an excellent example of our strategy coming to life, premium audio and video content distributed across every platform.

“This is going to be brilliant.”

McGuire and Stefanovic said they looked forward to working together after being friends for years.

“This is a wonderful new chapter. Karl and I have been talking about working together for years, and to do it on this scale…is a once-in-a-career opportunity,” said McGuire.

“We’re going to bring our audience along to wherever the big news, sport and entertainment is happening, with great music in between.

“Karl is one of my closest mates in the industry. Now we get to do this together. Off we go.”

Stefanovic said: “We are both ready to disrupt the status quo and let me tell you, we’ll have plenty of fun along the way. God, don’t we all need that.

“ARN have given us this opportunity, now watch us go and have a proper crack.”

The Long Weekend will be broadcast live on the GOLD Network, Fridays 12-3pm across Australia, live streamed and on demand on iHeart, and available via the iHeart global Network in New Zealand, Canada, Mexico, the US and the UK.

This exciting new format will be streamed on 9Now and Stan.

The Long Weekend will launch on June 19.
