‘Unknown Veteran’ marches 300km to put mental health in Anzac Day spotlight

A former special forces soldier has completed a gruelling 300-kilometre march from Sydney to Canberra, using the journey to shine a light on the mental health struggles facing Australia’s veterans this Anzac Day.

For 10 days, Marty Ryan – who marched under the name ‘the Unknown Veteran’ – walked up to 30 kilometres a day, drawing growing support from locals and fellow servicemen along the way.

Arriving at the Australian War Memorial on the eve of Anzac Day, Ryan said the mission was about unity and visibility for those often left behind after service.

“The focus is to represent every veteran … if they need support, if they need company … we’re walking side by side every way,” he said.

The 60-year-old, who served 32 years in the military, says too many veterans, particularly younger ones, struggle in silence.

He called for urgent reform to support systems.

His message is simple: Anzac Day should not only honour the fallen, but also support those still fighting battles at home.
