Born to Try singer Delta Goodrem has been named as Australia’s official entrant for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna.

Broadcaster SBS said Goodrem, 41, will perform Eclipse at the 70th Eurovision in the Austrian capital in May.

The song was written by Goodrem, along with Ferras Alqaisi, Jonas Myrin and Michael Fatkin (who also produced it).

Its accompanying video, set across the vast sand dunes of Newcastle, NSW, was released late on Sunday, premiering on the Eurovision Song Contest YouTube channel.

“I’m so honoured to represent Australia on one of the biggest and most iconic music stages in the world at Eurovision,” Goodrem said.

“As a singer-songwriter, music has been my lifelong passion. I’ve always loved the creativity, individuality, and joy Eurovision brings, connecting and uniting people across the globe through music; the universal language. I can’t wait to arrive in Vienna and make Australia proud.”

She will perform to a global global audience of more than 160 million viewers at Vienna’s Wiener Stadthalle.

Goodrem was just 15 when she signed her first recording contract with Sony Music. It followed her debut album Innocent Eyes, one of the highest-selling albums in Australian history.

The album pushed Goodrem onto the global stage, producing five No.1 singles. she has gone on to sell millions of albums around the world and have nine No.1 singles.

She has written songs for a previous Eurovision winner, Céline Dion, and worked alongside Olivia Newton-John, who represented Britain in 1974.

Speculation has run hot that Goodrem would be Australia’s 2026 Eurovision entry after she appeared at the Mighty Hoopla festival in Bondi two weeks ago in a sequinned outfit with “croissant” wings.

The costume was created by designer Amanda Tasevski for the official Eclipse video, although Goodrem never wore it for that.

I ended up wearing it at Mighty Hoopla. I’m not 100 per cent sure I nailed that outfit,” she told news.com.au

“I’ve welcomed the croissant (comments). I’ve actually been calling it a croissant, but it was meant to be an eclipse.”

While her selection was a closely held secret until Monday, Goodrem was actually approached and agreed to the Eurovision gig some time ago.

“Last year I was in London and there was such a buzz with Eurovision going on. I was doing my own shows then. And somebody had asked me – would you be on Eurovision? I was like, I love Eurovision, so if the right moment happens I will be there,” she told ABC TV on Monday.

“At the end of the year I got a call and spoke with SBS and I said, ‘You know what, this moment feels the song is about alignment, about sort of the right place’, and it was – it felt like the right moment to be able represent Australia and fly with the music.”

SBS head of entertainment Emily Griggs everything had aligned to get Goodrom on board.

“We wanted to send one of Australia’s most iconic artists to the world’s most iconic stage,” she said.

“Her powerful voice is balanced by restraint and an openness that draws people in, creating performances that feel both intimate and expansive. Europe, get ready. Australia is lighting up the stage.”

Goodrem will be Australia’s 11th Eurovision entry since its first in 2015. The most successful so far is Dami Im, who was runner-up in in 2016.
