A balaclava-clad armed man has been arrested after allegedly threatening Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor while he was on a dog walk.
The man allegedly wielded an “offensive weapon” and behaved in an intimidating manner near the ex-prince’s home on the King’s Sandringham Estate.
The Telegraph reports the man had been sitting in his car when he saw Mountbatten-Windsor about 50 metres away. The man reportedly got out of his car and approached Mountbatten-Windsor while “shouting at him”.
The royal, who was accompanied by a protection officer, rushed towards his own car, which was parked nearby. The mask-wearing man reportedly ran after Mountbatten-Windsor’s car as it sped off.
The Telegraph reported that the ex-prince “was shaken by the incident and was asked to provide a statement, as was his personal protection officer”.
British police told the newspaper that officers were called to the village of Wolferton in Norfolk shortly after 7.30pm on Wednesday (local time) following a report that a man was behaving in an intimidating manner.
“Officers attended, and the man was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and possession of an offensive weapon,” they said.
“He was taken to King’s Lynn Police Investigation Centre for questioning, and remains in custody.“
Police did not name Mountbatten-Windsor in their statement.
The former prince moved to his brother the King’s private Sandringham Estate after he was evicted from his long-time home near Windsor Castle earlier this year.
Mountbatten-Windsor is provided with an annual stipend by the King.
It includes an allowance for the cost of private security but it is up to the former duke how he uses this, the Press Association understands.
Mountbatten-Windsor was stripped of his titles last year by the King. In February he was arrested on suspicion of leaking government documents to the late US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Mountbatten-Windsor has denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein and said he regrets their friendship.
