British actress Emily Blunt is facing a backlash online after what users perceive to be tone deaf comments from the Devil Wears Prada star.
In the same week Blunt received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, she told fans in an interview on the Betches Celebs YouTube channel that the secret to happiness could be quitting their jobs and settling for making “no money”.
When asked if she had advice for “women who are hating their jobs right now”, Blunt, who is estimated to have a net worth of US$80 million ($A112 million) replied under her breath: “Quit … no”.
The actress then laughed and added: “Just find something that you deeply want to do.
“Even if you’re earning no money, as long as you love it you’ll be happy,” she said.
Fans were quick to respond to Blunt’s “awful career advice”, pointing out that it’s easy for the wealthy actress to tell people to take a job that pays less.
“That can only be said by an (over)privileged person,” one viewer wrote in the YouTube comments, calling Blunt “entitled”.
On X, one user tweeted: “Emily Blunt really should know better than being this tone deaf. Can rich celebrities earning millions please stop preaching to the rest of us about how unimportant money is. It’s insulting.”
Another commented: “Genuinely terrible advice in the current job market but I would love to be this delusional and out of touch with reality.”
A different X user confessed that the Oscar nominee’s “distasteful” advice “made me think less of her”.
Somebody else slammed Blunt’s “privileged take” and noted that “not everyone has the luxury to go for the job they want and abandon the job they have now even if it sucks”.
Blunt, 43, has been out and about as part of promotions for the newly released The Devil Wears Prada 2, alongside Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci.
On Thursday, Blunt and co-star Tucci – who is also Blunt’s real-life brother-in-law – were honoured with stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, becoming the 2841st and 2842nd celebrities to receive the distinction.
Blunt and Tucci took to the podium together and expressed their gratitude for the honour.

Tucci, who is married to Blunt’s older sister Felicity Blunt, thanked his extended family and co-stars.
“I’d like to thank my sister – who is here– my incredible wife, my brother-in-law, John [Krasinski] and what’s her name, whom I absolutely love and adored from the moment I met her when she was 22, when we first made The Devil Wears Prada,” Tucci said jokingly referring to Blunt.
In the Devil Wear’s Prada 2, Blunt reprises her role as Emily Charlton, who has gone from being Miranda Priestly’s (Meryl Streep) assistant to a senior executive at fashion house Dior.
