Victoria Police say they are investigating Australian actor Ruby Rose’s bombshell sexual assault allegations against American singer Katy Perry.
It follows Rose’s claims that the popstar assaulted her in a Melbourne nightclub nearly 20 years ago.
Victoria Police confirmed on Wednesday that its sexual offences and child abuse investigation team was investigating the allegations.
“Police have been told the incident occurred at a licensed premises in Melbourne’s CBD,” police said.
“As the investigation remains ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.”
Rose, 41, dropped her accusations in a spray of posts on social media platform Threads on Sunday (US time).
“Katy Perry sexual assaulted me at spice market nightclub in Melbourne. Who gives a shit what she thinks,” she wrote in response to a post about Perry’s reaction to Justin Bieber’s weekend performance at Coachella.
“Though I am so grateful to have made it long enough to find my voice, it just shows how much of an impact trauma and sexual assault takes. Thank you for seeing me.”
Perry has denied the claims through a spokesperson, who denounced them as “reckless lies”.
“The allegations being circulated on social media by Ruby Rose about Katy Perry are not only categorically false, they are dangerous reckless lies,” they said.
“Ms Rose has a well-documented history of making serious public allegations on social media against various individuals, claims that have repeatedly been denied by those named.”
Melbourne-born Rose – who is on Australian TVs in SBS docuseries The Hospital: In The Deep End – said it had taken her “almost two decades” to speak publicly about the alleged incident.
“[Perry] didn’t kiss me She saw me ‘resting’ on my best friend’s lap to avoid her and bent down, pulled her underwear to the side and rubbed her disgusting vagina on my face until my eyes snapped open and I projectile vomited on her,” she wrote.
“After it I threw up on her, I told the story publicly but changed it to be a ‘funny little drunk story’ because I didn’t know how else to handle it. Later she agreed to help me get my US visa. So I kept it a secret. But I DID tell yall she wasn’t a good person.”
In further posts, Rose said she planned to report her experiences.
“I imagine they are past their statute of limitations, but all the more reason to try,” she said.
“I have a long list, it will probably take more out of me than I’m prepared for, but I will come back here to update others on the process, as soon as I am ready.”
Rose thanked one fan, who said they believed her.
“Before I open up about something incredibly raw and traumatic, I tell myself ‘it’s OK, you don’t need people to believe you, you just need to get it out of your poor body, before it gives you cancer,’” she wrote.
“But then I see this post and … tears consume me, in a good way. Thank you.”
In her “last” update on Tuesday night, Rose said she had finalised her reports and could not comment, repost or talk publicly about any of the individuals involved.
“This is a standard request from the police and in many ways, quite the relief,” she said in another Threads post.
“I can start the healing process now. And temporary (sic) move forward.”
Rose’s allegations come as a 2014 interview of Pitch Perfect actress Anna Kendrick on Conan O’Brien’s US talk show resurfaced, where she claimed Perry touched her during the Grammy Awards.
“Katy Perry finger-banged my cleavage. It was a weird night,” Kendrick said as the audience laughed and cheered.
“She’s very mature.”
“OK … she just does that?” O’Brien said.
Kendrick said her strapless gown was “kinda asking for it”.
“I have met her before … she’s aggressive. I like it,” she said.
