Rose Byrne snags first Golden Globe for Aussies

Aussie star Rose Byrne has won a Golden Globe for her performance in the indie comedy-drama If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.
“Of course I didn’t prepare anything. I didn’t sing in this movie. Thank you so much. This is such a shock,” the Sydney-born star, who had been favourite to take home the award for best performance by a female actor in a musical or comedy, said in her acceptance speech.
“Thanks so much to my parents for getting Paramount+ so they can watch in Sydney.”
Byrne paid tribute to If I Had Legs I’d Kick You writer-director Mary Bronstein.
“She wrote this unbelievable screenplay and she wanted me to do it, and I can’t believe you wanted me to do it … We shot this movie in 25 days for like $8.50. This is a tiny film so this is a huge thing to be up here,” she said.
Fellow Australian Jacob Elordi was also nominated in Sunday’s Golden Globes for his performances in Frankenstein – which he lost to Stellan Skarsgård in the Norwegian family drama Sentimental Value – and miniseries The Narrow Road to the Deep North. Sarah Snook could also take home her third award for her series All Her Fault.
Joel Edgerton has also been nominated for best male actor for Train Dreams.
Earlier, the Australian stars joined Selena Gomez, Kate Hudson and other top names in show business on the red carpet for the annual awards, one of the major film contests on Hollywood’s journey to the Academy Awards.
One Battle led the pack of movie nominees at the traditionally champagne-fuelled ceremony in Beverly Hills on Sunday night (local time).
The dark comedy tells the story of a washed-up revolutionary who springs into action when his daughter’s life is in danger.
Co-stars Benicio del Toro, Sean Penn, Chase Infiniti and Taylor were nominated alongside lead Leonardo DiCaprio. Taylor took home the night’s first award for her explosive supporting performance.
“To my brown sisters and little brown girls watching tonight, our softness is not a liability. Our depth is not too much. Our light does not need permission to shine,” she said.
Comedian Nikki Glaser returned for a second stint as host of the awards show.
“Just like Wicked, I’m back for a sequel,” she told the audience.
“Just like Frankenstein, I’ve been pieced together by an unlicensed European surgeon.
“And just like the podcasters nominated tonight, I should not be allowed to be this close to Julia Roberts.”
Glaser also poked fun at DiCaprio. She began by listing the actor’s accomplishments, but the praise was short-lived.
“What a career you’ve had. The most impressive thing is that you’ve been able to accomplish all of this before your girlfriend turned 30,” Glaser said in reference to DiCaprio’s notoriously young partners.

Skarsgård’s best supporting actor win was the 74-year-old’s first major Hollywood movie award. There was a standing ovation for him.
“I was not prepared for this because I, of course, thought I was too old,” said Skarsgård.
Amy Poehler won the inaugural award for podcasting, while KPop Demon Hunters triumphed in the best song category.
One Battle After Another has a leading nine nominations, competing in the Globes’ musical or comedy category.
The most comically poignant award of the night went to Seth Rogen, whose Hollywood satire The Studio memorably included an episode devoted to drama around a night at the Globes. (Sample line: “I remember when the red carpet of the Golden Globes actually stood for something.”)
Rogen won best male actor in a comedy.
“This is so weird,” Rogen said, chuckling. “We just pretended to do this. And now it’s happening.”
This year the presenters feature a mix of Hollywood A-listers such as George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Queen Latifah, along with rising stars such as the leads from Heated Rivalry, Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams.
While the Globes’ TV drama and comedy categories have massive overlap with the 2025 Emmys, the limited series group is full of new blood.
Recent buzzy series All Her Fault, The Beast in Me and The Girlfriend have all been nominated for best limited series and the honour of probably losing to Adolescence.
