Users of the world’s most popular social media website will finally be able to air their displeasure with the click of a button.

Early on Wednesday morning (AEST), Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg promised his company is “working on it”, TIME and The New York Times reported.

“I think people have asked about the dislike button for many years. Today is a special day because today is the day I can say we’re working on it and shipping it,” he told an audience during a question and answer forum.

Facebook long opposed the button because it preferred to promote positive emotions. Mr Zuckerberg said the purpose of the new button would be to show empathy — such as for the Syrian refugee crisis — not disapproval.

“What they really want is the ability to express empathy. Not every moment is a good moment.

“It’s important to give people more options than just like.”
