Free power for Aussie households – it’s a deal that sounds too good to be true, but that’s what the federal government is promising.
From next July, all energy retailers will be forced to provide free power for at least three hours in the middle of the day. Under the “Solar Sharer Offer”, you’ll be able to turn on your dishwasher, washing machine or air conditioner, or charge electric vehicles, during the day at no cost.
Right now, Australia has excess energy going to waste when the sun is shining. The scheme aims to shift demand from evenings – when electricity usage is high and prices peak – to the day.
According to data from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water, a small household will save 9 per cent off its bill if it moves 10 per cent of its energy usage to the “free power period”, while a larger household will save around 28 per cent if it changes 25 per cent of its usage.
But there is a caveat – you must have a smart meter, and not everyone will immediately benefit. The energy offer initially applies to New South Wales, South-East Queensland and South Australia, with plans to make it national in 2027.
The scheme is part of the Default Market Offer, so consumers have the choice to find other market offers which may be cheaper for them.
