Kerri-Anne Kennerley has spoken about her husband John’s ongoing battle to recover after a serious fall earlier this year left him critically injured.

John Kennerley, 75, suffered severe spinal damage after breaking his neck in a fall at a golf event in Coffs Harbour in March.

In an interview with The Australian Women’s Weekly, Kerri-Anne, 62, said her husband’s recovery had been a long process.

“I hesitate to use the word miracle but for us that is what John’s recovery has been like, a series of minor miracles,” she said.

“It started with him being able to breathe unassisted. And that was such an important step. Otherwise, he faced a life being attached to a respirator, being fed through a tube in his nose.”

John, who had been unable to speak due to a tracheotomy, was also recently able to utter his first words to his wife of 34 years.

“He said ‘I love you’ which, of course, I will always treasure,” Kerri-Anne said.

Kerri-Anne, who married John in 1984, has been by his side since the accident occurred.

In April, Kerri-Anne opened up her husband’s hospital room to Channel Seven’s cameras for a special episode of Sunday Night.

“He said, ‘the only reason I’m trying is for you’. Wow,” she revealed in the interview.
