A natural attraction in Italy known as Lovers’ Arch collapsed in extreme weather on Valentine’s Day in a massive blow for tourism.

The stone arch on the Adriatic coast, which draws couples with its promise of eternal love, was turned into little more than a pile of rocks and dirt.

The site at Faraglioni di Sant’Andrea, Puglia, has drawn lovers for centuries with its legend that those who kiss under the arch are destined for eternal love.

The cliff spot on the coast of Salento — the heel of Italy’s boot — is a popular place for marriage proposals, first kisses and other romantic milestones.

“This is an unwanted Valentine’s Day gift”, Melendugno Mayor Maurizio Cisternino told local media.

He said it was “a very hard blow” for the region and for tourism and a “blow to the heart”.

The landmark’s destruction was discovered on Sunday morning by passersby.

It’s believed the vulnerable area collapsed due to the impact of a storm named Oriana which brought severe weather to the area over several days.

“Unfortunately, natural processes are often accelerated by meteorological phenomena, such as the tail end of storm Oriana”, said Puglia’s regional president Antonio Decaro.
