A Virgin Australia plane has been damaged after colliding with a towing vehicle at Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport.

The incident occurred as the Boeing 737 was being towed to a hangar for maintenance on Sunday night.

“It appears to have become disconnected from the tug vehicle, causing the tug to impact the side of the aircraft,” a Virgin Australia spokesperson said.

The tug hit the side of the plane, tearing a large gash.

Repairs were under way on Monday.

“There were no passengers on board,” a Melbourne Airport spokesman told News Corp.

“An investigation is under way, and the relevant authorities have been notified.”

No disruption was expected in Virgin Australia’s schedule on Monday.
