US first lady Melania Trump “hates” her husband President Donald Trump’s fist-pumping, hip shake dance moves to YMCA, he has revealed.
Trump said that Melania thought his viral groove to the Village People’s 1978 hit – which he called the “gay national anthem” – ws “not presidential”.
He spoke about YMCA at The Villages retirement community in Sumterville, Florida, on Friday (US time).
“She hates when I dance to what’s sometimes referred to as the gay national anthem, you know. She hates it,” he told the gathered crowd.
Trump said the couple loved the song.
“But she goes, ‘Darling, please’ – you know, she’s a very elegant woman – she goes, ‘Darling, please, don’t dance. It’s not presidential’,” he said.
He said he told her: “It may not be presidential, but I’m leading by 20 points in the polls.”
YMCA was the soundtrack to the Trump’s 2024 US presidential election. He bragged on Friday that he got track to No.1 – 46 years after its release.
“You know, that song was No.5 32 years ago, and it went to No.1 32 years later. There’s never been anything like it. It never hit No.1. It was No.5 32 years ago, and it went to No.1 for months during the last months of the campaign,” he said.

In fact, YMCA was released 48 years ago in October 1978, and peaked at No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in February the following year.
It made No.1 only on the Billboard Dance Digital Song Sales chart in November 2024, and stayed there for six weeks.
“Village People’s classic YMCA spends a fifth week at No. 1 on Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales, the most for any song by a group in 2024. The song originally reached No. 2 on the Hot 100 in 1979 (sic),” Billboard wrote in an X post at the time.
The Village People performed at several of Trump’s inaugural events in January 2025. However, according to reports at the time, only one original member – lead singer and songwriter, 74-year-old Victor Willis – remains part of the band.
Another former band member, Jim Newman, said the current group had “nothing to do with the group that I was a part of”.
“Our Village People would never, ever perform at Trump rally,” he wrote on Instagram in 2025.
“We would never give him the right to use those songs, and we would never slap the face of the strong, especially gay audience, that made us who we are today.”
Last Friday, at the end of his speech to the retirement community, Trump treated the supportive crowd to some of his iconic fist-pumping, hip shake dance moves – as well as a faux golf swing – as YMCA blasted out of the speakers.
