Controversial Bali glass elevator project halted

A controversial glass lift being built on a stunning Bali cliff has been halted amid growing backlash over the “eyesore” and concerns about permit violations.
Work has been under way for about a year on a 182-metre lift at Kelingking Beach on Nusa Penida, a small island about 25 kilometres off Bali.
Videos of the unfolding project are going viral on social media and causing outcry amid fears that paradise is being “ruined” by an ugly structure.
Kelingking is one of Bali’s most stunning and untouched beaches, with its unique rock formations earning the nickname T-Rex Bay because of the resemblance to the backbone of a dinosaur.
Bali authorities have reportedly suspended the project due to concerns about permits and licences, as well as environmental impacts.
The Bali Sun reports that the provincial government has called for an investigation.
The lift is a project by Chinese developer China Kaishi Group.
Head of the special committee on spatial affairs, assess, and permits, Made Supartha, told the Bali Sun that the project had violated a law on spatial planning.
“The Bali Municipal police will ensure that no construction activities continue here,” he said.
The project was designed to make it easier for tourists to reach the powdery beach at the base of Kelingking, which currently involves a steep hiking descend and tiring climb.
However, locals and tourists are furious at the impact from the project’s construction on the aesthetic of the area’s natural beauty.
Dismayed Bali lovers reacted to a videos on Instagram highlighting the progress of construction.
“The whole part of getting down to that beach was the hike and climb! It made it exciting … sticking this in has just killed the vibe,” said benwrightyo.
“Such a shame. Bigger, more modern and more access isn’t always better. Don’t ruin what made these places an attraction in the first place,” wrote 2cupsoftravel.
“Leave the place like it was, natural beauty is best,” said p1nk_lolita.
Another commentator said the glass tower was a “classic example of how greed can ruin paradise”.

There are also concerns that boosting access to the beach below could lead to more drownings in the notoriously dangerous surf.
“The waves at the beach are really big and dangerous. Now everyone will get down with the elevator. I am sure a lot of bad things will happen,” said bbatusch.
Bali senator Niluh Djelantik said increasing access would lead more tourists to the “gates of disaster”.
“Long before this lift was built, we had already voiced our opposition. The risks are too great,” said Djelantik on Facebook.
Tourists visit Kelingking Beach for its breathtaking panoramic views which are popular with the Instagram crowd.
It has been listed as one of the top 10 beaches in the world by TripAdvisor and was among the 50 most beautiful beaches in the world in 2024 (The World’s 50 Best Beaches).
