Melania Trump says she has convinced Russian President Vladimir Putin to return Ukrainian children to their families.
The US first lady revealed she has an open line of communication with the Russian dictator.
The wife of Donald Trump has been working behind the scenes to reunite Ukrainian families.
She said eight children had been returned to their families within the previous 24 hours and more would soon follow.
“This remains an ongoing effort,” she told reporters at the White House on Friday (local time).
Trump said Putin had responded to her letter earlier this year pleading over the fate of Ukrainian children.
She said she remained in touch with the Russian leader.
“President Putin and I have had an open channel of communication about the welfare of these children,” she said.
“For the past few months, both sides have participated in several back channel-meetings and calls.”
The first lady said her representative was working directly with Putin’s team to secure the safe reunification of children with their families between Russia and Ukraine.
President Trump has expressed frustration in recent weeks for not ending the war in Ukraine.
