A woman has died after being struck by a car while on a pedestrian crossing, before the vehicle ploughed into a cafe at a Melbourne shopping centre.

Police said the 27-year-old woman was believed to be crossing outside Westfield Knox, in Melbourne’s east, when she was hit on Monday.

The Tesla then slammed into an outdoor dining area during the lunchtime rush.

Emergency services were called to Westfield Knox in the eastern Melbourne suburb of Wantirna South about 12.45pm.

The woman, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

A diner seated outside the cafe was assessed by paramedics at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle, a 51-year-old woman from Wantirna, and her female passenger were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said two people were transported to Maroondah Hospital in a stable condition.

Police do not believe the crash was intentional.

Martini and Co posted on social media that it was closed until further notice following the incident.

“Please stay safe and we will keep you updated when we can reopen,” it said.

A crime scene has been established and major collision detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
