Syrian refugee becomes the victim of NSW gun tragedy
A Sydney man has been granted bail after he allegedly shot dead a young family friend, who had just arrived from war-torn Syria, in a tragic accident on a rural NSW property.
Adnan Al Youssef, 41, was on a camping trip with two other men and five children at Bundella about 100km west of Tamworth over Christmas.
Youssef took a rifle from his car to clean it just after 10pm on Boxing Day when the firearm accidentally discharged and hit 21-year-old Ali Wannous, police say.
Mr Wannous, who AAP understands had only arrived from war-torn Syria two months earlier, died at the scene.
Youssef was taken by detectives to Quirindi Police Station charged with manslaughter and he was refused bail.
He appeared at Parramatta Bail Court via audiovisual link on Friday where Magistrate Robert Abood granted him conditional bail, noting his lack of criminal history.
Youssef, a foreman at a construction company, surrendered $5000 surety, must live at an address in Yagoona, surrender his passport and report to Bankstown Police Station daily.
He is expected to face Tamworth court on January 30.
