Substance found on plane at Sydney airport

A suspicious “white substance” found on an American Airlines plane at Sydney International Airport as luggage was being unloaded has been handed over to NSW forensics for examination.

Emergency crews, along with airport firefighters, were alerted to the incident at 7.48am on Friday after reports “a white substance” was found after the plane touched down.

American Airlines flight 73 from Los Angeles had landed in Sydney at 7.15am.

Seven fire crews including two Hazmat teams are on the scene.

The plane docked in Bay 1 and NSW Fire & Rescue is handling the case, an Air Services Australia spokesman told AAP.

Firefighters in spillage gear have conducted tests and identified the substance as a low-irritant chemical additive, NSW Fire & Rescue spokesman Norman Buckley told AAP.

The area has been deemed safe and the substance will be handed over to forensics for further testing, Mr Buckley said.
