Pauline Hanson has once again hit out at the media after it was revealed the One Nation senator used party funds to stay in a luxury hotel during her trip to Europe last month.

The five-star Conrad London St James was Hanson’s base while in the UK capital, where she interviewed controversial far-right activist and convicted criminal Tommy Robinson and attended a conservative conference.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported on Friday that Hanson used One Nation funds to stay at the hotel, which costs around $900 a night.

Although the senator appears to have acknowledged the claim, she denied that her room was left empty for five nights while she flew to Italy to meet mining magnate Gina Rinehart.

“When mainstream media publish lies, it only diminishes their trust with the Australian public,” she wrote in a Facebook post on Friday

The senator claimed that Channel Seven, which was shooting a Spotlight episode featuring her, was originally going to pay some of her UK expenses.

“They pulled out forcing One Nation to cover all travel costs,” she said.

“I can confirm that while I was in Italy, accommodation in London was cancelled.”

One Nation senator Sean Bell also dismissed criticism of the trip.

“I can assure people … when we go overseas, we do so making sure people get bang for their buck,” he told News24.

The allegations come after One Nation’s “Fire the Liar” campaign accrued $5 million from thousands of small donations in a only few months.

Bell sought to assure donors the money raised through the grassroots fundraiser had been “cordoned off” and cannot be used for other causes, including international travel.

“All the money that was sent to that is being used on that issue,” he said.

Hanson also said in her Facebook post that she could confirm Fire the Liar funds “have been quarantined to fight Labor at the next election”.

Hanson has previously defended the overseas trip, which included a five-night stay at an Italian resort with Rinehart, insisting taxpayers did not have to pay a cent.

Increased scrutiny has been levelled at One Nation as the minor party has repeatedly out-polled the major parties.

Immigration Minister Tony Burke’s last-minute decision to pull out of a National Press Club address has been claimed as a win for the minor party.

Burke was expected to outline a new approach to immigration standards to meet the government’s net migration target of 225,000 people.

Bell said he welcomes the major parties coming to the debate.

“I’m glad we can all agree that One Nation was right about the need to end mass migration. Everyone agrees,” he said.

“Now we’re just arguing about the best way to do it.”
