Refusing to pay a sex worker could see you charged with rape

Not paying a sex worker could now lead to rape charges in NSW after a landmark case reshaped how consent is interpreted under the law.
Harjeet Singh Saini has been sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to 11 sexual offences against multiple sex workers after not paying for thousands for their services.
One of the women, Natasha Ambrose, said the offender had been a regular client she trusted for more than a year before he ripped her off.
“It also felt like being tricked into sex, being taken for a fool,” she said.
The case tested consent laws introduced in NSW in 2022 that centre around the inclusion of a “fraudulent inducement” clause.
Police say once investigators identified a pattern of behaviour, the case escalated, leading to charges and a prison sentence.
Advocates hope the ruling will increase awareness that such offences can be prosecuted like any other sexual assault.
