At least 10 people are dead – including a suspected gunman – and more are wounded after two men opened fire at Bondi Beach on Sunday evening.
“At this time, a further 11 people are reported to be injured, two of which are police officers,” NSW Police said in a statement.
Gunshots were reported after 6.30pm as hundreds of Sydneysiders attended the Chanukah by the Sea event to celebrate the start of the Jewish festival.
The men could be seen firing guns into the crowd as people screamed and sprinted for cover.
A number of people could be seen lying injured and unmoving on the grass at North Bondi.
Others were being loaded into ambulances on stretches while onlookers attempted to provide support.
A NSW Ambulance said paramedics treated patients for gunshot wounds. She was unable to provide an update on the condition of the patients.
Another video showed officers standing guard over a hunting rifle lying on the ground with an exclusion zone in place.
Police earlier advised anyone at the beach to take shelter.
“Police are on scene and more information will be provided when it comes to hand.”
Emergency services are also on the scene.
Witnesses at Bondi reported panic, confusion and disbelief as chaos continues to unfold with emergency services on the scene.
Broadcaster Erin Molan was in the area and said she heard gunshots.
“We can hear gunshots in Bondi … this is terrifying. Take cover. Active incident,” she posted on X.
NSW Premier Chris Minns described the reports and images coming from the scene as “deeply distressing”.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese released a statement on the shooting, saying the scenes at Bondi were “shocking and distressing”.
“Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives,” the Albanese said.
“My thoughts are with every person affected.
“We are working with NSW Police and will provide further updates as more information is confirmed.
“I urge people in the vicinity to follow information from the NSW Police.”
