‘Unbearable’: Widow’s tribute as teens charged over husband’s murder

A grieving skincare clinic boss has remembered her husband as “literal sunshine” as two teenage boys were charged with his murder in Queensland.

Police said a 15-year-old West Woombye boy and a 17-year-old Beerwah boy had been charged and would appear at Maroochydore Children’s Court on Thursday.

If convicted, the teenagers would face mandatory life sentences under the state’s controversial “adult crime, adult time” laws.

Zdravko Bilic, 57, was found dead in the front garden of his luxury Sunshine Coast home on Monday.

Sunshine Coast Detective Inspector Chris Toohey said police would allege the two youths entered Bilic’s house during a break-in around 11.30pm on Sunday.

“During that time they were disturbed by Mr Bilic, at which time … an altercation occurred.

“As a result of that altercation he received two fatal stab wounds.”

Bilic’s wife, skincare clinic founder Gry Tomte, was out of town and asked a neighbour to check on him after becoming concerned when she hadn’t heard from him.

The neighbour made the grim discovery about 7.30pm on Monday, finding Bilic lying unresponsive and with multiple stab wounds.

Toohey said it would be alleged the teens broke into another address on the Sunshine Coast and one in Brisbane.

Tømte, a self-described Norwegian skin expert who owns two Melbourne clinics, released an emotional statement on Thursday about the man who was her “entire world for 28 years”.

“The void he leaves behind is unbearable,” she said in a statement released by Queensland Police.

“From the moment we met, both of us living away from family in the new country we had fallen in love with, we knew instantly we were each other’s ‘person’.

“We were complete opposites — and together we made a whole.”

But apart from being her world, and that of his family and close friends, he was so much to others too, she said.

Tømte said Bilic was an avid soccer fan who was the most loved person (MLP) on his Melbourne and Sunshine Coast teams.

“He was the kind of friend who would drop everything to help anyone.

“And even if you weren’t his friend, if he saw you on the street he’d smile, have a chat — and if you needed help, he’d treat you the same way.

“He was the kind of man who on several occasions would quickly detour when we saw a lost dog – whether on a bike or in a car – and without hesitation footy tackle them to stop them in their tracks to make sure we could get them home safely to their families.”

One of the neighbours in the beachside suburb that has been rocked by his death said Bilic was “the whole street’s favourite person”.

But Tømte said his biggest legacy was his role as Coach Zed with Ginger Sport.

“Whether we were walking on the beach, going to the mall, or visiting the zoo – there would always be a little, enthusiastic excited voice yelling ‘Coach Zed, Coach Zed!’.

“It was so clear to me and everyone who saw this, that he was a superhero to the little kids he worked with.”

Tømte said anyone who had the privilege of being in Bilic’s presence would know he was “literal sunshine”.

“And the world is a little less bright without him in it.”

Police said it was possible Bilic had disturbed an attempted break-and-enter at the luxury home he shared with Tømte.

The couple’s $2.5-million-dollar home is within walking distance of the Sunshine Coast’s stunning beaches.

Norwegian-born Tomte owns the HÜD Skin and Body clinics in Melbourne. She founded HÜD (which rhymes with “food” and is a Norwegian word for “skin”), in 2014.

Detective Inspector Chris Toohey said Bilic’s death had rocked the local community.

“He was a valued member of the community. Any death is terrible and it has shocked the neighbours,” he said.

“He is a community-minded person who was well loved in the area.”
