Hero cop and the 'Country Bandit'
10 News+ speaks to former Victorian police officer Wayne Sherwell.
Sherwell received the Victoria Police Valour Award after he was ambushed during a traffic check on active duty in 1988.
Despite his service, Sherwell was arrested after he posted photos from the crime scene on social media … photos that were already in the public domain.
At the time of the incident, Sherwell was a fourth-year constable. He pulled over a man who he later found out to be Ian William Turner, also known as the “Country Bandit”. Turner had been on the run after robbing five banks at gunpoint.
What happened next Wayne Sherwell will always remember.
