A 65-year-old Australian man has been killed during a snowmobile accident in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

The man lost control of the snowmobile during a tour as he descended Blackcomb Mountain and crashed into a tree about 11pm on January 1, a Canadian Wilderness Adventures spokesman told AAP.

Tour staff and a nursing student provided first aid, but he died at the scene.

His 54-year-old female passenger, also Australian, was taken to Lions Gate Hospital in Vancouver.

ā€œCanadian Wilderness Adventures wishes to express its sincerest condolences to the family and friends for the sad loss,ā€ the CWA spokesman said.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says it is providing consular assistance to the man’s family.
