Australians encouraged to CC Brandis in emails

Online left-wing group Beyond Green has asked Australians to start copying Attorney-General George Brandis into all their emails to save the senator the trouble of reading them.

The campaign comes in response to Senator Brandis’ controversial metadata legislation, which will force telcos to retain their customers’ metadata for two years, a move that has people worried about their privacy.

The legislation is expected to cost between $200-$400 million.

“Attorney-General George Brandis is very very curious,” the Beyond Green site says. “He wants to know exactly what we’re all up to online. And the phone.”

“[‘Curious George’] is a clever little monkey. But he’s really not too technical. Please pledge below to help George feed his insatiable curiosity.”

Soon after the campaign launched, people began to include senator.brandis@aph.gov.au in all their emails and quickly discovered that this email address was linked to an Apple ID, meaning people could also iMessage the senator.

Mr Brandis soon noticed his iPhone’s inbox was unusually high and unlinked the Apple ID account on Monday afternoon (coincidentally, this happened not too long after he was censured in parliament over his treatment of Gillian Triggs).

As reported by Buzzfeed, software engineer Justin Simon also discovered that several other MPs have their APH emails linked to Apple devices, with Environment Minister Greg Hunt even replying to a few messages.
