Swimming Australia has called out fake news posts that falsely quote some of our most celebrated athletes, accusing them of not wanting to compete with transgender rivals.
None of the stories are real, but they have been circulated online.
10News+ tried to track down who is behind the fabricated articles and why.
It discovered a Facebook page which has posted falsified stories since 24 September.
“Swim Hub” lists its location as a resort and spa in the United States, but a worker told 10News+ they don’t know what the Facebook page is or who is behind it.
BlackBay Senior Associate Isabella Orlic says “we do see some of these anonymous or fraudulent pages linking legitimate businesses online, in an attempt to avoid enforcement and to conceal their true identity”.
The social media law expert also adds that Facebook’s parent company Meta can uncover who is responsible for the publications.
Meta has responded – stating it is investigating.
