Cody Simpson reveals unique story behind his tattoo and new chapter

Cody Simpson has revealed for the first time the story behind one of his most recognisable tattoos and how it connects to both his sporting and personal journey.

The singer-turned-swimmer said the design, inspired by film icon Steve McQueen and the classic movie Papillon, reflected key influences in his life and career.

“I’ve just always loved that tattoo,” Simpson said, explaining his admiration for McQueen and the era of 1950s and ’60s cinema that continues to shape his outlook.

He added that Papillon, which is French for butterfly, also linked to his time as a competitive swimmer, making the tattoo personally significant.

Beyond the ink, Simpson reflected on what he called a “self-development arc”, shaped by discipline, resilience and stepping away from the pressures of fame.

“I’ve been through a lot… and now I’m prioritising what’s best for me,” he said.

Now entering a new chapter, Simpson said he was focused on growth, purpose and building what came next.
